Scherenschnitte of Me Knitting

 Looking for an empty sketchbook yesterday, I found this loose snip floating. I must have cut it during my knitting phase. (Knitting turned out to not be in my skill set and this is probably my only reminder of it.)

I am anxious to do some papercutting, but there are so many other projects on my “to do” list.

Papercutting Class

 I'm taking a papercutting Zoom class this weekend. There is a wide range of skills of papercutting in there. Many people are artists in other media and are new to this. So, I am a little ahead of the game here since I have been papercutting for many years. I am learning some good, new tips along the way though. 

The assignment we did today was to take an image we found (or had) and turn it into negative and positive shapes. Since I used a photo out of the newspaper, I won't put it on a nice background and give it the appearance of being a finished work of art that I composed all on my own.  But, here's what I did today.

The paper I cut into was a heavy sheet of paper from the back of a magazine. I used it because it was dark on the majority of the paper. The original photographic image was one from the front page of our newspaper this week.

Scherenschnitte Christmas Card for 2016

The month of November was filled with much papercutting.  I snip my own Christmas cards each year and it is no quick task.  I do love doing it though.  If I wake at 4 in the morning, I get excited because that means I can go down into my studio and snip in the relative dark and quiet for a few hours.  It feels like Santa's workshop.




Anyway, this was the design for my 2016 cards. The cards are 3D.  The four sides each have a different scene.

Though I get a lot of positive feedback from the folks to whom I send cards, I do not get many cards in return anymore.  I guess the tradition is going out of fashion. Makes me sad.
