Stand Up and Teach

...........sigh of relief. I am back in a real classroom this year. Hal-le-lu-jah. You have no idea how much of a relief it is to teach in a classroom instead of a teeny tiny ex-teacher's lounge. The kids all congratulate me. My colleagues congratulate me. I'm happy.

One of the things I am trying out this year is a standing desk. I had read where sitting all day is unhealthy for you in so many ways. So my "desk" is a discarded dictionary stand from our library. I originally grabbed it because it would hold oversized paper.

Standing all last week, I could actually tell a difference in my exhaustion level. It was less! Probably the reason why was that I stood on this exercise thingy....core balance trainer...
and it gave my feet and legs great cushioning. I'll let you know how much I like this idea after I've been using it for a while.

Yea for a real-deal classroom!

Your comments about standing is interesting -- I would have thought your results would have been the opposite, but then I'm the Original Couch Potato. I'd love to hear how you feel after a month, if there really is a difference in energy levels. I find that if I sit all day I just want to sit all night, too.

I had a desk in my art room, but I spent most of the day moving around so really looked forward to those rare moments when I could sit at the desk and catch up on paperwork, email, etc. I hardly ever sat down during my teaching time, unless I sat down next to a kid to help him out or to work with the kids.

How interesting... You should really keep us posted on the results of your standing all day on the exercise thing...you could really be on to something! :)

Congrats on having a real space to teach in again! I have a desk but only really use it at the end of the day when I am catching up on paper work. I always feel a difference when I go back to school in Sept. because I am on my feet all day and not used to it. My legs were so tired last week!

Congrats on your space! I have a big, beautiful desk in my room that I rarely sit at. I usually end up moving my laptop/important papers the tables in the center of my room so I can easily access them while walking around the room, monitoring the kids. Usually as soon as I sit down for lunch my whole body feels exhausted! Standing as much as you can is the way to go!

That's a great looking podium that you've converted into a desk. I want to hear more about how you may like that blue cushion you're using to stand on, it looks like it would be very good for you.

Oh, the joy of having a room! Since I teach after school at three schools, I have to haul it all with me...but then again, I'm so fortunate to get to teach art at all- our district doesn't have any elementary level art teachers!
