I've been wanting to crow about some great deals I got on my trip to California.
1.) On a trip to the LaBrea Tar Pits Museum, the ticket seller told me that if one of our group was a teacher, they would get in for free. My school i.d. was the last thing I would have thought to bring along on vacation. Fortunately, the name of my school system happened to be in tiny letters on the corner of my dental insurance card. Ding! Ding! Ding! Free entry for me!
2.) Hotwire. We traveled down to San Diego, but I hadn't reserved a room til the night before. I often bid on airfare, car rentals, and hotel rooms via Hotwire and Priceline. Since I wasn't on my own computer, I was fearful about putting my credit card numbers and such on someone else's computer. After looking around on Hotwire's website, I found a telephone number that you can call for a good deal. I don't think you can bid using that number, but they will give you a reduced price. The rack rate for our room was $88 and I got it for $66. I saw on another site that someone else staying at my hotel bid on the room at the same time we were there, and got the room for $49 a night. I was happy that my discount was as good as it was though. The room was wonderful!

I had remembered to Hotwire my car rental before I went, and the price was about 40% off the regular rate.
3.) Though I wouldn't have chosen to go, we went to SeaWorld in SanDiego. It turned out that I had a surprisingly good time. No one was grouchy even thought the weather was wet, dry, hot and cold and we were there for hours and hours. It was wonderful. I believe that the entry fee was $69 per person. The ticket seller asked if I had AAA. Since I did, they gave me $12 off EACH TICKET!!!. That almost pays my AAA fee for the year.
We had a great visit. The times when I saved money just sweetened the pot a little bit.
