Blacksmith

I discovered blogs late in 2007. Before then, I thought that blogs were only for political writers. It never occurred to me that women would be writing about their lives and art. The Mackville Road blog is the only one I discovered at that time, that I still read. The author, Diane, lives the life I dreamed of when I was young. She runs a warm home; leads a creative life; and schools her children in a rich world of experiences in the natural world.

Her husband, Lucian, is a blacksmith. She has given peeks into his world, but it has been left tantilizingly mysterious. I asked her to someday blog about his shop and she sent me a link to his web site. Oh my. You have to take a look....and get your wallet out.

Blacksmithing is always something I've wanted to do. I use to weld but that was in a factory and not quite the same. I see that Lucian teaches classes, so after I get my daughter married this weekend I can start rebuilding my bank account and in a few years go to Vermont and take one of his classes.

My great grandfather was a blacksmith... and my grandpa has an anvil which he left to my brother!

My youngest brother carried on Grandpa's business and builds leaded lights (windows) and has most of the old tools...

Lucians work is amazing... I really would love to carve wood!
