Chinese Brush Painting with Second Graders

Chinese brush painting. I appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the art, but hate teaching the skill. Though I've read about it, practiced it, and taken workshops on it, I still feel so inadequate trying to teach it. And I feel guilty when I do not teach it, because it is in my curriculum.

But this class........

loved it.

Every single one of them.

They practiced brushstrokes and then used them in their own paintings. And then were not happy when they had to stop at the end of class.

I'm very curious to see how another class feels about it tomorrow.

You are undoubtedly a wonderful teacher or these are some very talented second graders - I know it's the former

Do you just show the really good art or all of your students so free and uninhibited in their work?

Hey, Jackie.........In that class, all of the work blew me away. When I repeated the same exact lesson today, there were fewer that amazed me. There were great ones, but some were oddly identical and rather dull. I'm contemplating what made the difference between the two groups. It always is a great puzzle when you teach the same lesson to two different groups and get two different outcomes.

I've just been looking over the two groups...it is an amazing difference. I'd be curious to hear if you've figured out any rasons why. Sometimes it's just a certain group dynamic that feeds off eachother...
What I can't get over each time you share about your projects is how amazing YOU are. My daughter soooo needs you! At some point I'll have to contact you directly about that :) Glad you like the Halloween post.
